Today at 5:13 pm, a Bismarck police officer conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle at 16th Street and Thayer Avenue. The driver of the vehicle exited his vehicle and began scuffling with the officer. In the process the two ended up on the ground and the officer realized the suspect had removed the officer’s firearm from his holster. As the officer and the suspect fought for the firearm, it discharged striking the suspect in the thigh area.
The officer was able to regain control of his firearm and was able to take the suspect into custody. At 5:17 pm, the officer called for an ambulance for the suspect.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital for his gunshot wound. The officer is also going to a hospital to be checked just to be sure he was not injured.
The suspect has not been positively identified at this time. The case is under investigation.
