Those glowing balloons hovering over the region weren’t UFOs. Sold by regional fireworks dealer Memory Fireworks, those brightly illuminated balloons hovering above at around 11:00pm last evening were Memory Lanterns launched to honor and remember loved ones, specifically those serving in the military.
Memory Lanterns are small paper hot-air balloons with a small candle inside that, according to Memory Fireworks, can be seen for miles.
Memory Fireworks first introduced the lanterns in 2005. Beginning in 2009, the fireworks dealer began donating $1 for each balloon sold to the North Dakota National Guard, amounting to just under $5,000 its first year.
