From beginnings in 1977 in the basement of the old Paterson Hotel in downtown Bismarck to being one of the largest vacuum & sewing stores in the Upper Midwest, J&R Vacuum & Sewing has a long history of customer service. Originally selling and servicing vacuums only, the store grew, moving to larger quarters in 1979, again in 1982 and finally to its present downtown Bismarck location in 1991. After moving to the much larger Bismarck location in 1991, the decision was made to add sewing machines. In 1995, the Pfaff brand of sewing machines was added. The Quilt Shoppe at J & R was opened just a couple of years later. In 2010, J&R added the Brother brand of sewing machines and sergers. The Quilt Shoppe at J & R was also expanded to carry twice the quilt fabric selection!
J&R has won many sales & service awards over the years from suppliers, including Diamond Club awards from both Pfaff sewing machines and Riccar vacuums. This is in addition to the Small Business Person of the Year Award. We are serious about being the best in our community.
J&R charity sewing events are just one of the ways we give back to our country and community. The Bismarck store has donated hundreds of vacuums under the “Help Us/Help Others” charity vacuum program. Under this program, vacuum trade-ins are reconditioned and donated to various charities. Under the same program, sizeable contributions are made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer awareness.
Owners, Jim & Cindy Barnhardt, along with the entire J&R staff want to thank existing customers for their years of support and invite new customers to give us a try. After all, “It’s All About You!”
