Local developer, Loran Galpin, has revealed plans to renovate the historic Cowan Building, located on the southeast corner on 4th Street and Broadway Avenue in downtown Bismarck. The plans call for renovation of the upper 3 floors into residential units, 2nd floor into offices, and the street-level floor into retail space.
Galpin is noted for renovating other downtown buildings, including the Civic Square Building and the American Bank Center headquarters.
The Cowan Building has sat largely empty for years. Bridal N’ More recently relocated from the building, leaving Broadway Floral of Hearts as the building’s only remaining tenant.
The Cowan Building is named for Cowan Drug, a long-time tenant of the building, whose owners also lived within the building. The core of the building was built in 1898, almost immediately after the fire; however, the building was gutted and fully renovated in the mid-1950s.
