Bismarck’s eighteen recycling collection sites are closing this week effective, Friday, February 7, in preparation for the new residential Single Sort Curbside Recycling Program starting mid-March. Jeff Heintz, Director of Public Works Service Operations said, “Our baler building will be leased to Waste Management for transporting recyclables to their material recovery facility in Minneapolis. The existing baler equipment is being replaced by Waste Management. It will take approximately five weeks to transform the facility to a single sort recycling transfer site. During this time Waste Management will also be in receipt of over 12,000 recycling containers that will be used for the rollout of the Single Sort Curbside Recycling Program mid-March. There won’t be enough room in the baler building to store the recyclables and change out the equipment.”
Homeowners in Bismarck are encouraged to save their recyclable items until the new containers are delivered to their homes, or if necessary, temporarily dispose of them with their garbage until the new program begins. The recycling drop sites will be reduced to nine locations when they resume in early April. The nine sites will then become single sort sites that will accept all of the same recyclables that can be placed in the new curbside containers.
