On the heels of a tax increase from the approved, and desperately needed, school bond for Bismarck residents, Burleigh County Commissioners have authorized a property tax increase of 2%, which will amount to about $10/year on a $190,000 home. That was down from the original plan for a 20% tax hike.
There was also a minor reference of possibly establishing a county sales tax instead of hefty property tax increases.
A new $40 million jail being planned is a big reason for the tax hike, along with additional operational costs such as 11 new employees.
