Edwinton was the original name of the town that is now the City of Bismarck. It was named for Edwin Ferry Johnson – Northern Pacific’s former chief engineer who first lobbied for constructing the northern transcontinental railroad. The town was renamed “Bismarck” the following year, in July 1873.
