Robert Dykshoorn was one of Mandan’s most noted mayors, having served three terms from 1988-2000. He is particularly notable for his efforts to preserve the former Mandan train depot beginning in the 1980s as a city commissioner through its rededication in 1992. The depot’s park to its west was dedicated Dykshoorn Park in August 2005.
In addition to his lengthy municipal roles, Dykshoorn served as North Dakota’s dairy commissioner and twice sought state office, including running in the Democratic primary for the party’s Secretary of State nominee in 1984.
Dykshoorn died March 6, 2005 at age 52.
