John Bowen was a judge and Burleigh County surveyor who, as an agent for George Sweet and J. E. Turner, assisted in laying out Bismarck and selling the first land to private citizens. Bowen Avenue is named for him.
Bowen was born June 11, 1832 in Deerfield, PA and died March 5, 1917 in Saint Paul, Minnesota.
