Cloverdale Foods is a privately-owned regional meat processing wholesaler based in Mandan.
Dairy farmer Hoy Russell originated Cloverdale Foods as Mandan Creamery in 1915. It began offering premium pork products soon after. During the 1950s-1970s, Cloverdale shifted focus towards its meat line and food distribution as bigger dairy companies eroded market share. Cloverdale fully divested its other operations in 1995.
Cloverdale Foods broke ground on its present facility in Mandan’s Industrial Park in October 1986. The new plant opened on February 22, 1988, relocating from downtown Mandan where Runnings is now located. It was 56,000 square feet and built at a cost of five million dollars. At the time, Cloverdale processed more than 11.5 million pounds of meat annually and was Mandan’s largest private employer, behind only the public school district and ahead of Burlington Northern Railroad and the Amoco Refinery. It remains a successful enterprise to this day.
