Jumbo’s Drive-in

Jumbo’s Drive-in was a long-time Mandan restaurant located at 1000 E Main Avenue. Jumbo’s was established by “Jumbo Jim” Hammes in 1956 upon acquiring the local Dairy Queen franchise, but it wouldn’t formally adopt the Jumbo’s branding until 1960. It was perhaps best known for its Sloppy Joe. Today, its Sloppy Joe sauce is available at certain local retailers.

Jumbo’s expanded in 1970, then changed formats in 1979 to a family restaurant called Trails West, which closed in 1983. The existing Dairy Queen was built adjacent. The former Jumbo’s location is now home to Railway Credit Union.
