In its continuing efforts to return to profitability, Sears Holdings has announced intentions to close 10 of its namesake stores and 68 Kmart stores this year. None of the stores in North Dakota made the latest closure list.
This news quells a widely circulated rumor that Bismarck’s Kmart was shuttering and being replaced with a Cash Wise Foods, as was the case in Dickinson.
The news is also certainly welcome to Gateway Fashion Mall, where Sears maintains a strong presence.
Sears first arrived in Bismarck in 1946 in the building now home to Zimmerman’s Furniture, where it remained until relocating to Gateway Mall in 1979. Kmart was the city’s fist modern discount department store when it opened in October 1971.
