The uniquely-sloping brick building located on the northeast corner of Rosser Avenue and 4th Street is likely to soon be demolished. In its place will be a 3-story office building, if its pending sale goes through as expected.
Dakota Theater (later renamed Dakota Twin) had opened at the location in October 1951 as a single-screen, auditorium-style movie theater seating nearly 900 moviegoers. It later converted into dual screens in 1975 to compete against sprouting multiplexes across the region. The theater ultimately closed in 1994 and has housed numerous businesses since, most recently Simply Salads.
The Bismarck Tribune recently did an interesting story about its redevelopment plans that also included some interesting facts about some of the region’s former movie theaters, including Dakota Theater. Read it here.
Official plans have not yet been finalized and the sale is still pending on the historic building.
